    GhostlyEye product description

See GhostlyEye application images pageGhostlyEye V1.0: the Surveillance Screen Grabber.

GhostlyEye is a new type of "screen grabber": it is a utility to take snapshots of your full windows desktop screen, while remaining out of sight for your computer system's momentarily user. It's more or less an undetected ghost, who's watchful eye is looking over a user's shoulder, while he or she is working with your computer system. A timer based & embedded "surveillance camera"-like device for your computer.

It will take these screenshots in a timer automated mode, using settings that you will have configured previously. A GhostlyEye session can be executed manually or it can execute automatically at each system start, during which it will not show itself (i.e., the only "visible" user interface, is the Preference settings dialog, as shown above).

(Being a normal computer process, GhostlyEye will be visible in Windows Taskmanager, however).

You can configure the preferred timer interval between the various screen snapshots. A session does not need to be limited, but a time limit and/or a quantity based limit can be configured. If preferred, GhostlyEye could also close itself when the task is completed (this would mean that either a time or quantity limit has been reached).

For example: GhostlyEye runs in the background on your computer, not visible to the momentarily user. At every snapshot command, invoked by the timer settings, the full screen is captured and saved to a disk file (in either a .jpg, .bmp, .wmf or .emf format), using a sequentially numbered filename (as in "MyFileName(##).bmp"). You don't need to do ANYTHING about this process, it's fully automated.

If you feel the need to do so, than you can process these image files afterwards in your preferred image editor.

GhostlyEye supports four major image standards:
    • Bitmap ".bmp" format - Windows Device Independent Bitmap.
Recommended image format for business use - maximum image quality, but a larger image filesize. Recommended format, if max. quality is required.

    • JPEG ".jpg / .jpeg" format - Joint Photographic Experts Group.
Very good image format, optimized for photography, with an adjustable "image quality / file size" ratio (see the "Preferences" dialog). This is actually GhostlyEye's default format, with a preferred "compression / image quality" ratio of "80" (where a ratio of "100" is the max. image quality, resulting in min. compression). Recommended format for overall images. Filesize is very efficient, when compared with the other supported formats.

    • Windows ".wmf" format - Windows Metafile.
A Metafile is a collection of structures that store a picture in a device-independent format and was designed for the Windows V3.x operating system. The Metafile format is useful to transfer images between applications that do not have other options available, but is not the best choice for image storage.

    • Windows ".emf" format - Windows Enhanced Metafile.
An Enhanced Metafile is used in applications meant for the Windows95 (and later) operating systems and is an improved version of the ".wmf" Metafile (see above).
The possibilities for a timer operated screenshot application are numerous and are only limited by your own creativity. See also our Product Features Summary, for more specific technical details.

Printing of the captured and stored images can be done by using (for instance) the standard Windows Imaging program, that you can find on under the "accessories" menu on your computer. Otherwise, our PictureBook application or most wordprocessors and image editors will be able to do this for you.

(Please note - recreative use: Some games operate in "non-windows video memory", as for example some games that use additional video accellerator cards, such as the powerful 3Dfx cards. The graphic representations, created by these cards, are sometimes created outside of the "normal" windows video memory and these might - as such - NOT be within reach of the GhostlyEye (and Windows) image snapshot routines).

(For your information - As a GhostlyEye user, you may be interested using a searchable image database system? If so, please have a look at our application "PictureBook - your Personal Graphics Database". Read all about it on the PictureBook Product Information page. When purchasing these applications simultaniously, you are offered a discount on the second application.

(For your information - Where GhostlyEye is a timer based screen grabber for use in a hidden process, we can also provide a screen grabber that offers similar functionality in a very visible and openly accessible process, providing your computer's operator with a continuously available user interface. If you are interested, please feel free to have a look at GhostlyEye: the Timer Automated Image Grabber).
